About Bhavatarini’s Arangetram:
In India, the completion of dance training in classical Indian dance is celebrated with a traditional stage debut. Bhavatarini Prabhakaran is a student of Dr. Sharmila Rao and has learned this traditional art for many years. The performance is her public debut and will be accompanied by live musicians.
Bhavatarini Prabhakaran was born in South India and moved to Switzerland with her family when she was 6 months old. She began her training in Bharatanatyam at the age of 6 years with Smt. Vijaya Rao, a seasoned Bharatanatyam exponent, whose breadth and experience in this art form were invaluable assets. She has given Bhavatarini a solid foundation and has inspired her to learn classical dance with discipline.
Bhavatarini is being further trained by Dr. Sharmila Rao, an accomplished classical dancer, and a proficient Bharatanatyam teacher. Ms. Sharmila’s immense support and continuous effort have helped Bhavatarini transform into a performer.
Bhavatarini’s reflection on her classical dance pursuit: “It was challenging for me to grasp the complexity of this art, particularly to learn and communicate the expression (Abhinaya). Practicing this classical dance was more of an obligation at the beginning stage, but over time it gradually transformed me into a confident individual who started enjoying the art. Learning Indian classical dance gives insight into my Indian culture, heritage, and tradition providing me with a wonderful way to stay connected to my roots.
With Ms. Sharmila, there has been the freedom to express my thoughts. She encourages the students to be creative allowing contemporary concepts to blend with the traditional form. Ms. Vijaya Rao has taught me this art form with authenticity, helping me to understand our cultural treasures.
My profound gratitude to my Gurus Dr. Sharmila Rao & Smt. Vijaya Rao for cultivating and refining my skills by introducing the invaluable intricacies of Bharatanatyam.”
