About Dr. Sharmila Rao:

Sharmila is a Bharatanatyam dancer and dance teacher. She received her training under Mrs. Vijaya Rao, Head of Nateschwara Academy, and P. S. Ramaswamy. She has international experience as a stage artist and performed all over Europe and in India, where she was awarded “Natyamayuri”. Additionally to her dance career, she completed an M.A. in Indian Studies, followed by a Ph.D. on the transposition of ancient texts into Bharata Natyam.

Sharmila enjoys that dance has an inexhaustible potential, which she’s challenged to explore day after day. Her profession is more than just a job; it’s a calling for her. She loves collaborating with other dance artists in Switzerland, enhancing her dance vocabulary, and creating new and innovative dance projects, like her major dance event, “Leela – Elements of life”, the science communication project Dance Your Science, and children’s workshops on Hinduism (Rietberg Museum). As a board member of the Swiss Nathya Sabha (association of Indian dancers in Switzerland), she strives to bring dance enthusiasts from all over Switzerland together and create more awareness of the vast potential in the local art scene.

About Dhiviyaa Satkunanathan:

Dhiviyaa Satkunanathan is a classical Bharatanatyam artiste from Switzerland with a dance Diploma from IITA (International Institute of Tamil Arts) as  “Bharathakalaimani”. She received training under Mrs. Anusha Satkunanathan (M.A of Fine Arts), Head of Bharathanjali Nadanalayam Dance School. By learning Bharathanatyam, Dhiviyaa feels bonded to her religion and the traditions of the Tamil culture. She loves to stay grounded, explore her inner spirituality, and dance according to rules and structures as Bharathanatyam has taught her.

Over the years, Dhiviyaa has taken part in a wide range of performance work – She has delivered many solo and group performances and participated in major dance competitions called “Natya Mayil” and “Navarasa Natyham” and religious events throughout Switzerland. Her recent creation was choreographing two dance pieces with 35 classical dancers for the Contribution Video of A.R. Rahman, the Mozart of Madras. Her work was posted on A.R Rahman’s Instagram page.

About the Program:

A Margam in Bharatanatyam is a tradition-fixed sequence of dances that correspond to the repertoire and ability of the dancer and her dance style. A Margam performance is a progressive journey into the nuances of classical Indian art and gives the viewer an idea of the highest state of consciousness.

The program “Dvirupa” turns two bodies and two dance styles into one perfect whole. Sharmila, who is a disciple of the Bharatanatyam Cheyyur style, and Dhiviyaa, who has learned the Kalakshetra style, both „visit“ each other’s style this evening and thus create a varied program full of exciting choreographies that are never seen in one single Margam.

The dance repertoire is accompanied by Shajinthavi Ketheeswaran (Kalavithagar, Isaikalaimani & B.F.A) for Vocal, by Vepoosana Shanmugaratnam (Bharathakalaimani) on Nattuvangam, by Aathisha Logithan-Uthayakumar (Isaikalaimani) on Veena and Lavan Rasiah (Isaikalaimani) on Mridangam.

Escape into an unforgettable evening full of beauty, passion, and enthusiasm. Buy your tickets today – and discover the path leading to tradition.
