I offer workshops for children from kindergarten age to teenage, in which I bring them closer to Indian culture and of course Indian dance. The workshop can take place as an interactive themed course in school or as a course in a project week. The focal points can be chosen individually.
● Feel and try out Indian clothes
● The colorful world of the Hindu gods
● Telling stories with Indian hand gestures
● Get to know the instruments you need for Indian dance
● Rehearse a few steps from Indian dance
● Cultural differences between India and Switzerland
● Get to know Indian smells and tastes
● Look at Indian scriptures and hear the languages that go with them
The program is supplemented with a dance performance by the course instructor. The time of the workshop can be adapted to the possibilities and needs. Depending on the number of children, enough free space is needed so that we can move. The location is the responsibility of the organizer, I will bring all the necessary utensils with me.
The art educators write about such a series of workshops in the Rietberg Museum: “The collaboration with the dancer Sharmila Rao was met with great enthusiasm by the teachers, the school children and within our team. Sharmila Rao narrated and danced the Hindu Stories of the gods, which were both funny and exciting – time flew by when she explained and showed in detail how she experienced a puja in her childhood. In the second part of the morning, she taught the school classes some dance steps, and the children then enthusiastically followed a suitable piece of music under her expert guidance. We thank Sharmila Rao for her great commitment and hope to continue this pleasant collaboration.“
